Tips on the Regular Maintenance of Semi Trailers
Semi trailer plays important role in cargo transportation. Semi trailers have huge loading capacity and are quite suitable for the transportation of bulky cargo such as large-sized equipments and cargos which can't be dismantled. Still, semi trailers are also sued for the transportation of coals, agro-products and steel materials. However, since the load of semi trailers can be as high as hundreds of tons, the occurrence of dysfunctions is also frequent in use. Therefore, regular maintenance is of extreme importance.
There are several major semi trailer parts we have to check during regular maintenance. First are tires. In checking the tires, we have to see whether they are deflated or whether there are things like plastic bags or wood batons stuck in the tire rims. This is because when hard things are stuck in the tire rim, they might cause the tire rim to deform or crack. And then, we have to check whether the screws keeping tires in place are fastened. When there is one or two screw loose, the tire might detach the semi trailer on road and the aftermath can be disastrous. So when such risk is found, wrench should be used to fasten the screws tightly.
Then we should check the trailer suspension system. The tire abrasion is a common problem of semi trailers given their heavy load. But if the suspension system performs its duty, the situation can be relieved. For this reason, we have to check whether the U-bolt is fastened to place. If not, we have to fasten the screws to bring it back to place.
Still, we should also keep the load evenly distributed on the trailer chassis. When the cargo load is unevenly distributed on the trailer, its chassis will tilt into a sharp angle against the ground. In such condition, the loads of front axle and back axle are unevenly distributed and the axle parts might break as a result. Therefore, in loading cargo, when should load cargo in a way to make the axle equally loaded.
Last but not least, we should check the braking system. Semi trailer has great inertia force while braking because of its own weight and the cargo load. Therefore, the performance of braking system should be attached great importance. To check whether the braking system works or not, we can check whether there are leaks in air braking system.
